PhD Special Scholarship Program (SSP)
The Center for Human-Engaged Computing is looking for talented doctoral candidates who are passionate to pursue research in Human-Computer Interaction. The candidate will work at the center that offers a unique opportunity to do HCI research in collaboration with leading researchers around world. The scholarship is funded by Kochi University of Technology and research projects will be carried out the center of Human-Centered Computing.
The applicant must have a master degree in Computer Science or a relevant field majoring Human-Computer Interaction, Cognitive Neuroscience, Accessibility, Educational Technology or similar topics, should demonstrate outstanding academic performance (e.g. good programming skills, strong knowledge of math and statistics, interaction technologies e.g. Microsoft Kinect, eye tracking system, smartphones, etc.), research ability, communication and interpersonal skills, and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team as well as independently at the center. The applicant must have strong ability in the English language (Japanese is a plus, but not essential).
The current projects running at the center are: (1) Development and Generation of Next Generation User Interfaces, (2) User Interface Design for the Ageing Population, (3) Designing and Developing Air-based Interactions and (4) Human-Engaged Computing
Development and Generation of Next Generation User Interfaces
Human-Computer interaction is a new, essential crucial branch of computer science requiring the knowledge of topics and mastery of techniques from a large number of scientific fields, including physiology, psychology, motor control and ergonomics. HCI entails the study of physical, cognitive and engineering aspects of the design of information technology for ease of use.
User Interface Design for the Ageing Population
Given the growing ageing population and the advance of technology, there is a need for a focus on how technology can be used to meet the needs of the aged. Human Computer Interaction (HCI) entails the study of physical, cognitive and engineering aspects of the design of information technology to meet human needs. This project will carry out HCI studies to develop interface designs that will improve user experience and usability for older adults and help reduce their dependence on expensive and socially stigmatized specialized devices.
Designing and Developing Air-based Interactions
Investigating human interactions using air-based interfaces and studying the efficiency of air-based interfaces for various applications and environments. Furthermore, the project aims to develop air-based interface prototypes, e.g., air-haptic interfaces, air-input interfaces, air-based bi-lateral communications etc., Our research emphasizes the understanding of human interaction capabilities and the modeling of human performance when interacting using air-based interfaces in both common interaction situations and also in specialized situations where electromagnetic interference must be minimized e.g., fMRI scanning environments and the like. Research outcomes will not only support the design of air-based systems suitable for various interaction conditions but also contribute to our understanding of human behavior and interaction guidelines in general.
Conducting Human-Engaged Computing (HEC) research. HEC is a new research area concerning synergized interaction between humans and technologies and seeks to leverage full capacities of both humans and technologies for the well-being of the global society. This project will carry out studies to design and develop interactive systems that promote full engagement, well-being, behavioral change and that support HCI researchers to innovate with progressive widening global awareness and relevance to considered human priorities.
